"All Call Signs Alpha, Sunray Two", the squadron net crackled to life as Major Richard Hargreaves' voice cut through the static. "Advance in three'. Inside their Challenger 2s, the crews of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment moved with practiced precision-final checks on sights and ranging systems, loaders securing rounds, commanders scanning the gray horizon through their cupolas. The low hum of engines and the sharp tang of cordite hung in the air as each man settled into the rhythm that kept fear at bay.
Days of relentless contact had taken their toll. Faces were drawn, voices quieter now, the easy confidence of the advance tempered by the stubborn resistance they had met at every turn. Ahead, enemy armour lay dug-in along the ridgeline, waiting. It would be a brutal fight-close, deliberate and unforgiving.
But the regiment had not come this far to falter. Steel and discipline would carry them through. As the order to move came down, the Challenger 2s surged forward, engines roaring, guns trained on the enemy. Whatever waited beyond that ridge, the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment would meet it head-on - and break it.
---
With its usual professionalism, the British Army had prepared for war. Now, as the Soviet Army flooded across the border into West Germany, it is ready and waiting. Fox, Scorpion and Scimitar recon vehicles skirmish with the Soviet forward detachments as the Challenge 2, Challenger, and Chieftain armoured regiments wait. The infantry hold the towns and woods, forcing the enemy into killing zones, with new Warrior infantry fighting vehicles in fire support. If anything breaks through, the airmobile troops in their Lynx helicopters will hold them. The British Army is ready.
